Trump would narrowly beat Biden in 2024 rematch, new poll says

Former President Trump will edge out President Biden if the 2024 election ends in a rematch between the two, a new poll suggests.

Trump leads the hypothetical race by 49% to Biden’s 45% among registered voters nationwide, according to a poll conducted by SSRS for CNN.

Although the margin was small, it came just days after a separate poll showed the 45th president ahead just a year after Election Day — including in five of six key battleground states.

The SSRS poll shows that voters’ trust in Biden has continued to decline over the past two and a half years, with 61% saying they disapprove of his handling of the country, 42% of whom say they feel “strongly” about their dissatisfaction.

The 39% approval rating is the lowest a modern president has seen in his re-election bid, including Trump, who reached 41% a year before he was ousted from the presidency.

While the poll shows the two one-term presidents are likely to face off next year, it also shows that neither has clearly won the affection of the American public.

Only 36% view Biden favorably compared to 59% who view him unfavorably, while 38% favor and 56% disfavor Trump.

A total of 72% of those surveyed believe that the country is headed in the wrong direction, with 61% of voters finding the commander-in-chief to be contributing to the problem.

By comparison, 57% found Trump to be “part of the problem” and 42% saw him as part of the solution.

Only a quarter of Americans believe the 80-year-old “has the stamina and acumen to serve effectively as President,” while 53% feel Trump does despite being just three years younger.

When it comes to Trump’s weaknesses, however, people find strength in Biden.

About half of voters said the commander in chief respected the rule of law compared to just 35% who said Trump did.

Only a third of voters believe Trump is honest and trustworthy, compared to 42% who think Biden is.

Overall, half of voters said there was no chance they would vote for Biden compared to 48% who said they would not support Trump under any circumstances.

Only 4% of undecided voters said they could be swayed to support the incumbent, and only 2% would consider voting for Trump.

The SSRS poll surveyed 1,514 adults drawn from a probability-based panel from October 27 to November 2 and has a margin of error of about 3.1 points.
