Two adults, teen electrocuted after power line falls on SUV during Oregon storm; toddler held by dad miraculously survives

Two adults and a teenager were electrocuted after a tree and power lines fell on a truck outside an Oregon home during a powerful winter storm Wednesday — while a child held by one of the victims miraculously survived.

Emergency crews responded to reports of people on fire in the street at the intersection of Northeast 122 and Northeast Siskiyou in the Russell neighborhood of suburban Portland around 11:45 a.m., according to KPTV.

A tree branch had snapped and pulled a live wire into the red Ford Expedition below, electrocuting the SUV.

The occupants of the vehicle were unaware of the danger and stepped out onto the road, surprising them.

“The vehicle was electrified, so when they hit the ground and the vehicle, an electric current flowed through them and the end result was we had three individuals who died,” Rick Graves of Portland Fire and Rescue told the outlet.

Firefighters found three people dead about 35 feet from the car.

The child’s father, identified as Nash, was holding the child when he was electrocuted, according to KGW.

The 2-year-old was taken to the hospital for evaluation and is in good condition.

The child’s mother, a 21-year-old who was six months pregnant, was killed along with her teenage brother, identified as 15-year-old Ta’Ron Briggs, a 10th-grader at Milwaukie High School.

Their heartbroken father said he and his wife heard a “boom” and saw the car on fire.

“It just hurts. Watching my kids die — can’t do anything about it,” Randy Briggs, the father of the two brothers told KGW. “I have six children. I lost two of them in one day.”

Majiah Washington’s neighbor heard what he thought were gunshots before he saw a flash of light.

“In my mind, I was just thinking, ‘I’ve got to get this baby.’ That was the only thing I could think of: ‘I’ve got to get this baby,’” Washington told KGW.

Portland Fire and Rescue stressed the importance of not getting close to any downed wires, as they can be live, and if someone is ever caught in a situation in their car with wires overhead, they should not leave the vehicle.

“If it’s a live wire that’s going to cause you problems, we can start the power company, they can de-energize the line,” Graves said. “As long as you’re in your vehicle and you have the rubber from the tire connected to the ground, you’re grounded, you’re safe.”
