Two people died and at least nine were hospitalized Saturday following a 35-vehicle pileup on Interstate 5 in central California, authorities said.
The incident — which involved 17 vehicles and 18 big rigs — happened on the southbound side of the highway in Bakersfield with fog believed to be the main cause, according to BakersfieldNow.com
Shocking images of the incident show a mangled tractor trailer, including an overturned semi on the side of the road, a white pick-up truck wedged between two rigs and a broken cargo box, with some of its contents spilling onto the highway.

“I just witnessed the biggest and scariest accident of my life,” said a driver traveling on the northbound side of I-5 write on X.
Manny Garcia, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol in Buttonwillow, said he expected the smashup to close most of the highway for the rest of the day.
The CHP said the accident is under investigation.
