In 1987, at the age of 18, this cowboy turned professional. He was able to become a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). He was named PRCA Rookie of the Year in 1988 after winning $45,977 in three rough stock events: bull riding, bareback riding, and saddle bronc riding. Murray quit the PRCA circuit after another year. He and his uncle, Mr. Butch Myers, are the only two cowboys to qualify for one or more competitions. In 1989, he and his uncle held a friendly tournament where his uncle Myers topped him with $2,786 going into the finals.
He won $58,031 and beat Myers by $21,202. In 1989, he was the youngest winner worldwide. At age 23, he became the youngest millionaire in rodeo history. In 1919, he also won the PBR Bud Light Cup World Championship event in Las Vegas. He has earned $265,000, which is the most won in a PBR event.
