Tributes continue to pour in for late Hollywood veteran Norman Lear, with the latest tribute coming from Tyler Perry.
The American icon best known for his decades-long career as a TV screenwriter and producer breathed his last on Tuesday, December 5. The entertainment industry mogul’s passing occurred at the remarkable age of 101 years, after developing over 100 successful shows.
Indeed, the New Haven native’s accomplishments have touched the lives of millions, including Perry, another well-known face on the publishing scene. The “Madea” creator recently reflected on Lear’s legacy in a lengthy statement, raving about how the father of six saved his life.
Tyler Perry Credits The Late Norman Lear For Inspiring His Successful Career
A day after news of the “Good Times” producer’s death broke, Perry paid tribute to the late entertainer with a heartfelt message. Instead of sharing a sad note, the 54-year-old skipped the poignant theme for an awe-inspiring farewell to the man who changed his life.
The New Orleans native shared a photo of herself posing with the late actor in a stunning outdoor scene. The pair wore matching bright smiles and casual sweaters, looking like the perfect geeky couple with their glasses.
In the accompanying caption, the “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” producer revealed the snap was taken when she met her hero for the first time. The moment marked a milestone in Perry’s life, and he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to thank Lear for positively impacting his childhood and, overall, his career.
“Not long ago, I was happy to meet one of my heroes. He invited me to lunch at his house, and as we sat and talked and laughed, I got a chance to tell him how he helped save my life,” the Primetime Emmy Award winner began her Instagram tribute, adding:
“I shared with him that he taught me to dream bigger dreams through his example. He was 100 years old at the time but as sharp as ever. Full of great wisdom and advice, and I take it all in. Right before I left, I asked, ‘At 100 years old, what are you looking forward to?’ Without hesitation, he said, ‘Tomorrow.'”
Perry notes that this “simple but effective lesson in living your life to the fullest one day at a time” coincides with the name of one of Lear’s most popular TV projects, “One Day at a Time.”
The billionaire producer went on to list other hits like “Sanford and Son,” “Maude,” and “All in the Family,” noting that these shows brightened his dark childhood. In the words of the developer of “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne”:
“They were the only thing that brought me laughter and joy to me as a child living a nightmare every day. I am very happy that I had the opportunity to say to him, thanks to his vision and work, he gave me many ‘tomorrows’ to look forward to. So today, sadly, I say goodbye, and I salute a veteran.”
The African-American Film Critics Association Award recipient went on to praise the deceased as a hero, and he also thanked Lear for inspiring him to “try and bring laughter to the world like he brought to a little boy like me.”

Army Veteran Dies of Natural Causes at Home in Los Angeles
A day before Perry’s heartfelt tribute to the Hollywood Walk of Fame honoree, her family announced the icon’s passing in a statement. The late TV producer’s loved ones have asked for the public’s privacy as they go through this difficult time and thanked fans for their condolences.
“Thank you for the moving outpouring of love and support in honor of our great husband, father, and grandfather,” the Lear family said in their statement before reflecting on the screenwriter’s legacy. Grieving relatives wrote:
“Norman lived a life of creativity, perseverance, and empathy. He deeply loved our country and spent the rest of his life helping to uphold the basic ideals of justice and equality for all. Knowing and loving him is the greatest gift.”
“We ask for your understanding as we mourn personally in celebration of this extraordinary man,” they concluded their message. As for how the former Air Force member died, his publicist confirmed Lear died at his home in Los Angeles of natural causes.
