Tyler Perry To Build A New House For 93-Year-Old Losing Home To Developers

Looks like Tyler Perry is making headlines for all the right reasons!

Josephine Wright has been actively fighting developers in Hilton Head, South Carolina to keep the land her family has owned since the Civil War. Many people, including several celebrities, have donated to the 93-year-old’s GoFundMe, and one celebrity went the extra mile by building her a new home.

Actor and filmmaker Tyler Perry is now involved and is building a 5-bedroom home for Wright because he will lose the home he lives in with his grandchildren.

Wright’s house and land have reportedly been part of his family for more than 30 years, but the developers of the land claim it is part of their property. The fight has been fierce for years, and Wright, a 40-year-old grandmother, 50-year-old great-grandmother and 16-year-old great-grandmother, has stood her ground to keep what is rightfully hers.

“I’ve been a fighter my whole life,” Wright told local news WSAV-TV. “It confused me at first, but then it pissed me off.”

Wright was angered by a lawsuit filed by Bailey Point Investment Group earlier this year. The group reportedly wants to buy the land from Wright. However, he didn’t want to let it go due to the fact that it had been in his family for generations. Unfortunately, the group filed suit to seize his property.

This is where Perry steps in to help.

TMZ reports that Perry’s construction crew will build a new home for Wright and her grandson in the coming weeks after the necessary permits are filed.

Perry originally pledged to help Wright in July when the lawsuit became public. And now months later, as the fight continues, he stands by his word.

GoFundMe Has Raised More Than Its Original Goal!

In May, Wright’s granddaughter Charise Graves set up a GoFundMe to help her grandmother fight the developer.

“Bailey Point Investment, a greedy land development company, is trying to take his property from him because his land is right in the middle of their new residential subdivision, under construction. This land has been in our family since the end of the Civil War and he has poured his heart and soul into preserving the property for himself and his family to enjoy for generations to come,” the GoFundMe description reads.

“Unfortunately, Bailey Point Investment is trying to force him off the land so they can develop it for their profit. The harassment these poor women endured and are still suffering at the hands of this irresponsible company is unimaginable. He was falsely accused by Bailey Point of trespassing.”

The description goes on to explain that the developers claim that Wright’s back porch and shed are encroaching on their new property.

“In their lawsuit, they also allege that he is not the rightful heir to his property on which he lived and paid taxes for over 30 years,” the description continued. “My grandmother was heartbroken but resilient and not ready to give up without a fight. That’s why I’m turning to you, the community, for help.”

The GoFundMe has a goal of $350,000 and has so far raised $363,245.

NBA star Kyrie Irving donated $40,000 four months ago and then donated an additional $24,240 less than a month ago. Rapper Snoop Dogg also donated $10,000 a few months ago. Nearly 7,000 other donations were also made by people donating anything from a few dollars to thousands to support his cause.

A few weeks ago, an update on the GoFundMe page explained that after a weekend filled with celebrations and tributes to Wright at the Roots & Rivers Festival and a yoga session at her home, a tree fell on her home.

“Grandma Josephine is not home and luckily, no one was hurt,” the update read. “I can’t say the same for the house. He had two holes in his roof.”

It looks like Wright’s troubles will soon end with not only a happy GoFundMe fundraiser but also a new home, courtesy of Perry and her altruistic spirit.
