Tzi became interested in performing after being cast as Buffalo Bill in the elementary school drama Annie Get Your Gun. He began his professional performing career as a theater performer in 1973. In 1975, he made his first outdoor theater appearance as the Monkey King in the Beijing opera Monkey King at the Yellowstone King in Roosevelt State Park. Mako’s performance in Pacific Overtures had a significant impact on his acting career in the late 1970s.
Likewise, he appeared in various plays written by David Henry Hwang, including ROB, Yellow Face, Flowers Drum Song, and The Dance and the Railroad.
