UK animal rescue crowdsources for cat born without hips

A UK animal rescue has raised more than $6,000 to pay vet bills for a kitten born without a hip – a condition so unusual that vets “have never seen a case like it.”

Severn Valley Rescue, a nonprofit animal rescue in Shropshire, England, has raised thousands of dollars to fund surgery for “Phoebe,” a 7-month-old kitten born without a hip joint.

The little black cat “was born with a very rare condition where he’s missing his hip joints and his leg joints are hyperextended – making it look as if his back legs are on the wrong side!” rescue founder Amanda Ball writes.

“Phoebe” was surrendered to an animal rescue when her owner couldn’t afford to take her to the vet for much-needed treatment, according to GoFundMe.

The rescue said it would cost at least £3,000 ($3,821.46) for X-rays, CT scans and orthopedic consultations, although additional funding may be needed once it is up and running.

“We hope to raise enough money to get the surgical team at Southwater Vets in Telford to x-ray, scan and operate and hopefully get this beautiful little creature back on all fours again,” Ball wrote.

The happy little cat was “purring all the time,” the nonprofit wrote on Facebook Monday.

“You pet him – he purrs. You pick him up — he purrs, you smile at him — he purrs…. he’s a noisy little engine. We just adore him.”

Despite her unusual condition, “Phoebe” was not in pain, the animal rescuer wrote on social media.

“We want to emphasize – he is not in any pain, so putting him to sleep is not something we will consider. We however want to improve his quality of life if we can,” the rescuer wrote on the fundraiser.

Although the team at Southwater Vets, who provide “Phoebe” treatment, say they have not seen cases like this, they are working hard to find a solution.

“The great team at Southwater Vets have never seen a case like it, but they are determined to find a solution and they are working hard to find a way forward,” Ball wrote.

As of Tuesday morning, the fundraiser had raised £5,010 ($6,382.24) of its £5,000 goal.

The team hopes to get “Phoebe” moving at “full speed ahead.”
