The Scottish capital will erect barriers near a set of steps that have been driven over by unwitting drivers following wrong directions from Google and Apple maps, officials have said.
The temporary measures in Edinburgh will come into force after several vehicles, including at least one commercial lorry, drove the wrong way and got stuck on the top of the stairs when relying on navigation aids, according to reports.
“The footpaths in this area are very busy, so this incident is really worrying,” said a councillor, Scott Arthur, according to Sky News.
“While we expect drivers to use common sense in situations like this, we will be installing temporary barriers this week to prevent it from happening again.”
The street layout reportedly changed over the last year when stairs were installed.
A delivery driver recently on Monday had a very embarrassing accident when he was trying to reach a nearby theater.

“I just follow (the navigation system). I always remember I used to go down this way. I followed it and just got stuck,” he told BBC Scotland News. “I didn’t know there was a step there, I used to go down this way. I’m a little embarrassed about it.”
Officials wrote to Apple and Google hoping the tech companies make changes to its navigation tools.
Although Google Maps recently confirmed an update had been made, the city is awaiting a response from Apple Maps regarding a correction request, Sky News reported. For now, the barriers will be put in place.

“(Satellite navigation) is a very useful tool, but it’s not a substitute for common sense,” Arthur, the local official, said. “Cars and trucks don’t go down stairs.”
