UK prime minister Rishi Sunak says he’s thankful King Charles’ cancer was ‘caught early’

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak weighed in Tuesday on King Charles’ shocking cancer diagnosis, saying he was grateful the disease had been “caught early.”

Sunak told BBC Radio that he was “shocked and saddened” to learn of Britain’s newly crowned king’s battle with cancer.

“Just all our thoughts are with him and his family,” the British head of government said. “Thankfully, this was caught early, and now everyone will be praying that he gets the treatment he needs and makes a full recovery.”

Although he will suspend his public engagements for the duration of his treatment, Charles plans to continue most of his private work, including his weekly meetings with the prime minister – and Sunak confirmed that he is in regular contact with the king.

“That will of course continue as usual and we will resolve everything,” Sunak said, although he declined to say whether he would meet the king face-to-face.

Buckingham Palace announced on Monday that Charles, 75, who has been on the throne for less than 15 months, is suffering from a “form of cancer,” which was detected when he underwent a procedure for a benign prostate enlargement a week ago.

Apart from confirming it was not prostate cancer, the palace offered no further details on Charles’ condition.

“His Majesty has today started a regular treatment schedule, during which he has been advised by doctors to postpone the duties facing the public,” the palace statement said. “Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to carry out state government affairs and official paperwork as usual.”
