A group of about 15 tourists – including a couple who spent $5,000 on their vacation – have taken legal action against the travel agency that arranged their stay at the five-star hotel where they suffered severe gastric symptoms.
Three hotel guests even landed in hospital while staying at the Riu Palace Santa Maria Hotel in Cape Verde off West Africa after falling ill amid appalling conditions at the luxury location, according to reports. Now, they are among groups taking legal action against travel firm TUI which reportedly booked the trip.
One plaintiff, Lisa Bradly, 58, told SWNS that four days into her $1,637 vacation in September, she started having diarrhea and “felt like I couldn’t breathe.”

A doctor at the scene told the UK woman her blood pressure was very low and she needed to go to hospital where she was treated with intravenous fluids, heart tablets and other medicines.
“It was absolutely horrible. It felt like someone was squeezing my heart and I felt like I couldn’t breathe,” he told a UK news channel.
Couple Lorraine Wilson and Mark Bonner, both 42, spent more than $5,000 at the hotel for a period in October only to experience severe diarrhea and stomach cramps, SWSN reported.
They were also reportedly recommended to visit the hospital for treatment.
“The vacation quickly turned from what we hoped would be a dream trip into a disaster,” Bonner told the outlet. “What’s more worrying is that we don’t seem to be alone.”
“We couldn’t hold water and I’ve never been so sick in my life,” added Wilson.

Three hospitalized guests described a hotel full of poor hygiene, including “cats wandering around” and “flying everywhere.”
“I was surprised by the standards of cleanliness,” Bradly said.
Riu Hotels declined to comment on the allegations, the BBC reported.
TUI did not respond when asked for comment, the outlet reported.

International injury lawyer representing the tourists, Jatinder Paul, said “action needs to be taken,” especially after another 300 people complained about the same hotel last year.
“Obviously, our customers now want answers about how they got so sick on a five-star holiday,” he told SWNS.
