A month-long blockade by Polish truckers on the Ukrainian border is delaying deliveries of combat supplies — and the dispute has no end in sight.
Truck drivers began blocking the road to the border crossing on November 6, creating lines nearly 20 miles long and lasting weeks in freezing temperatures, and preventing the transport of pickup trucks, tourniquets, night vision equipment, drone parts and other materials and medical supplies.
Polish drivers are protesting competition from their Ukrainian counterparts, which they say is undercutting their business amid lax European Union transport regulations.
“This means that the Russian army will have the ability to kill Ukrainian soldiers and terrorize civilians for several more weeks,” said Oleksandr Zadorozhnyi, director of operations of the KOLO foundation, which helps the Ukrainian army with technology and cannot get materials through.
Protesters denied holding aid, according to reports, and the head of a truckers’ association in western Poland said there was no light at the end of the tunnel because authorities were not paying attention.
Polish protesters argue that their livelihoods are under threat after the European Union loosened some transport rules and Ukrainian truck drivers undermined their businesses. As the war progresses, Ukrainian authorities also oppose plans for voting to take place in illegally annexed territories in Russian elections planned for March. The vote could keep Russian President Vladimir Putin in power until at least 2030.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine called on the international community to impose sanctions on those involved in the election.
Separately, Ukraine continued its efforts to eliminate Russian influence on the front with its campaign to remove Soviet-era monuments. A statue of a Russian Civil War Soviet field commander was removed on Saturday as “decommunization” efforts were overhauled ahead of the war’s two-year mark.
