Ukraine breaks through enemy lines in Russia-controlled south: ‘Russian losses are really staggering’

Ukraine’s military is stepping up its offensive on Russian-held territory in the south while holding off Moscow’s offensive in the eastern town of Avdiivka, according to experts and military officials.

Ukrainian troops broke through enemy lines after an intensified offensive across the Dnipro River, near the southern city of Kherson.

“Ukraine’s actions appear to be larger than previously observed tactical raids,” the Institute for the Study of War think tank said in a report.

In the town of Avdiivka, just nine miles from the Moscow-controlled city of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, Kyiv’s army managed to repel and defend against Russia, which launched a relentless offensive there earlier this month, President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed.

“Thank you to all our sons, who strongly hold the defense and destroy the occupiers day after day,” Zelensky said in a video posted on Telegram.

“Today, Russia’s loss is truly shocking, and it is the loss by the colonists that Ukraine needs.”

Ukraine received new support from the United States in the form of the long-range Army Tactical Missile System, or ATACMS, which was deployed for the first time this week.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba confirmed to reporters that the US would continue to supply Kyiv with advanced missiles, The Telegraph reported.

Officials say ATACMS could help reshape the course of the war by allowing Ukrainian forces to attack previously inaccessible supply lines, air bases and rail networks used by Russia in occupied territory.

“This is a direct result of the agreement between President Zelensky and President Biden, which was reached in Washington during a private meeting at the end of September,” Kuleba said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry denounced the United States for supplying Kyiv with long-range missile systems, posting on X that this is a clear sign that, “Washington has once again shown its desire to escalate the conflict.”

The US, however, has begun to withhold 155 mm artillery shells from Ukraine obtained from a secret stockpile in Israel since January.

Citing Israeli officials, Axios reports that the Pentagon now plans to supply the Jewish state’s military with artillery shells to aid in its war with Hamas.

“We are confident that we can support both Ukraine and Israel in terms of their defense needs,” Brig. General Patrick Ryder, a Pentagon spokesman, told reporters.

The weapons removal comes as President Joe Biden has requested nearly $106 billion in funding from Congress, including aid for Ukraine and Israel.
