Ukraine holds defense conference to boost weapons production

Ukraine is holding an international defense industry conference as part of an initiative to increase arms production in the country and reduce dependence on foreign arms imports.

The Defense Industry Forum gathered 250 companies from 30 countries in Kyiv to find ways to increase its domestic weapons production, according to reports.

Kyiv has relied heavily on Western aid since Russia invaded in February 2022 but is increasingly working to boost its domestic arms industry amid concerns that external support from its Western allies will slow.

“Our first task is to win this war and return lasting peace and, most importantly, reliable peace to our people,” Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky said at the opening of the event Friday. “We will carry out this task through our cooperation with you.

“We are interested in localizing the production of the necessary equipment for our defense … and the advanced defense systems used by our soldiers that give Ukraine the best results on the front today,” he continued.

The opening of the event was attended by several diplomats, with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg delivering a speech via ZOOM.

“Heroism alone cannot intercept a missile. Ukraine needs capability, high quality, high quantity, and fast,” he said. “There is no defense without industry.”
