Ukraine shoots down 16 of 30 Russian drones in second night of attacks marking annexation anniversary

Ukraine’s air defenses on Sunday shot down 16 of about 30 drones launched by Russia overnight – the second day of overnight attacks – as President Vladimir Putin marked a year since four Ukrainian regions were illegally annexed “to their homeland.”

Drones were launched from the south, southeast and north overnight into Sunday, Ukraine’s air defense said on Telegram.

Authorities in Ukraine’s central Cherkasy region said they were attacked, resulting in a fire and at least one person injured.

“At night, the enemy massively attacked our Cherkasy region with attack drones. Unfortunately, there is an impact on the industrial infrastructure in (the city of) Uman,” Cherkasy Governor Ihor Taburets said on Telegram.

“As a result, a fire broke out in the warehouse. In particular, where grain is stored,” he said, adding that one person was injured.

The Ukrainian president’s office said that public infrastructure and warehouses were also damaged in southern Mykolaiv region and eastern Dnipropetrovsk region.

Russian officials said they were also hit by drones and gunfire on Sunday, injuring at least three people and forcing an airport to divert flights, Agence France-Presse reported.

“On Sunday morning, Ukrainian armed forces shelled the central market area in Shebekino,” said Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of Russia’s Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine.

“According to preliminary information, there are three victims – one woman suffered shrapnel wounds in the neck… Two other men suffered shrapnel wounds in their legs,” he said.

Ukraine also shot down several drones overnight yesterday, as Russia marked the one-year anniversary of its annexation of four regions in the war-torn country.

Twenty Iranian-made drones were shot down in the central region of Vinnytsia and another 10 in the southern regions of Odessa and Mykolaiv, the command of Ukraine’s Southern Army said on Saturday.

During the attack, Putin marked the one-year anniversary of Russia’s illegal annexation of four Ukrainian regions, saying that “they have made a choice to be with the Motherland” following elections labeled as fraudulent by the West.

In a state of the nation address, Putin insisted the vote was conducted “fully in accordance with international norms,” adding that residents of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia had expressed their desire to become part of Russia in a vote held earlier this month.

The address came after Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Friday that it would recruit 130,000 men for compulsory military service, starting Sunday.

The ministry said for the first time, it would recruit men in annexed territories as part of a conscription campaign.
