Nine Ukrainian families, including two small children, have been murdered in cold blood in their sleep in a Russian-occupied town, leading to the arrest of two Russian soldiers.
The massacre took place on Saturday night in Volnovakha — an industrial town located between the Moscow-controlled cities of Donetsk and Melitopol.
The soldiers, who have not been identified, were said to be drunk when they allegedly shot dead the entire Kapkanets family after the victims refused to hand over their home so Russian military units could enter, according to a statement from Ukraine’s Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
The killers had used machine guns fitted with silencers to kill their family members in their beds one by one, Russian media reported.
The victims have been identified as the head of the household, 53-year-old Eduard Kapkanets, and his wife, Tatiana, who were celebrating their extended family’s 51st birthday just hours before the slaughter.
One of the photos from the scene shows the kitchen table still laden with leftovers from the dinner party and some flowers standing in vases in the corner.

Also killed were the couple’s 31-year-old son Andreij and his 29-year-old wife Natalia, along with their children — 9-year-old Anastasia and 5-year-old Nikita — and 20-year-old son Natalia. older brother, Dmitry Khotinskiy.
The massacre also claimed the lives of Andrei’s younger brother, 25-year-old Alexander, and his brother’s 27-year-old wife, Ekaterina.

Harrowing photographs released on Monday by the prosecution’s office show a bullet-riddled couple embracing for the last time on their blood-soaked bed.
Another heartbreaking image depicts a man and a girl lying motionless on a bed next to a dead woman — all still tucked under a blanket, with splatters of blood decorating the wall above them.
“There is no doubt that Russia’s bloody hands are involved,” Ukrainian Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets wrote on his Telegram channel.

Russian investigators in the annexed part of eastern Ukraine said late Monday that they had detained soldiers suspected of carrying out the bloodshed in Volnovakha. They face murder charges that carry up to 20 years in prison.
The gunman is said to be from an undisclosed region in Russia’s Far East, and his motive appears to be a personal conflict. Lubinets claimed the suspect was a Chechen.

Earlier this month, Eduard Kapkanets was approached by a group dressed in uniform and carrying weapons, who demanded that “the family living there vacate the house for the residence of one of the Russian military units,” a statement from the prosecutor’s office said. read
When Kapkanets refused to hand over his home, the soldiers allegedly “threatened his family members with physical violence and left.”
A few days later, the soldiers returned and “shot all nine members of the family, who were asleep at the time,” the prosecutor’s office stated.
