Ukrainian family of 9, including two kids, executed in their sleep in Russian-occupied town

Nine Ukrainian families, including two small children, have been murdered in cold blood in their sleep in a Russian-occupied town, leading to the arrest of two Russian soldiers.

The massacre took place on Saturday night in Volnovakha — an industrial town located between the Moscow-controlled cities of Donetsk and Melitopol.

The soldiers, who have not been identified, were said to be drunk when they allegedly shot dead the entire Kapkanets family after the victims refused to hand over their home so Russian military units could enter, according to a statement from Ukraine’s Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

The killers had used machine guns fitted with silencers to kill their family members in their beds one by one, Russian media reported.

The victims have been identified as the head of the household, 53-year-old Eduard Kapkanets, and his wife, Tatiana, who were celebrating their extended family’s 51st birthday just hours before the slaughter.

One of the photos from the scene shows the kitchen table still laden with leftovers from the dinner party and some flowers standing in vases in the corner.

Russian investigators in the annexed part of eastern Ukraine said late Monday that they had detained soldiers suspected of carrying out the bloodshed in Volnovakha. They face murder charges that carry up to 20 years in prison.

The gunman is said to be from an undisclosed region in Russia’s Far East, and his motive appears to be a personal conflict. Lubinets claimed the suspect was a Chechen.
