Ultra-marathon runner banned for a year after using car in race

A leading ultra-marathon runner who used a car during the 50-mile race and then received a trophy for third place has been banned from competing for 12 months by the UK’s athletics disciplinary body.

Joasia Zakrzewski admitted driving the car during the Ultras 2023 GB Manchester to Liverpool race on April 7 but claimed she only did so after telling the marshals she was injured and was no longer competing.

Data from the tracking system at the event revealed that Zakrzewski had gotten a lift about 2.5 miles into the race.

The 47-year-old distance runner was stripped of her third-place title despite insisting she informed officials she had finished the race “in an uncompetitive manner.”

UK Sport’s Independent Disciplinary Panel disagreed with his portrayal of the situation when it decided to ban him for the year.

“The applicant collected the trophy at the end of the race, something he should not have done if he finished the race non-competitively,” the panel said.

“Nor did he attempt to return the trophy the week after the race.”

The runner blamed his mistake in accepting the trophy on the fact that he had flown in the night before from Australia and was “tired and jetlagged and feeling sick,” telling the BBC after the race, “I should have handed it back and not the picture was ready but I felt sick and didn’t think clearly.”

The athletics panel officials did not seem to accept his reasoning, stating in their decision, “Even though he suffered a brain problem on the day of the race, he had a week after the race to realize his actions and return the trophy. , which he did not do.

“Finally, he posted about the race on social media, and this did not reveal that he had finished the race non-competitively.”

Zakrzewski, originally from Dumfries in Scotland, now lives near Sydney in Australia.

He has previously set several running records including the Scottish 24 hour record, the British 200k, and the Scottish 100 mile record.
