The US military launched a new attack on anti-ship ballistic missiles in Houthi-controlled parts of Yemen on Tuesday.
The attack targeted four near-deployed anti-ship missiles and posed an immediate threat to merchant ships and US Navy ships, US officials told ABC News on condition of anonymity.
The attack – first reported by Reuters – was the latest incident in an ongoing tug-of-war in the Red Sea with the Iran-backed Houthis, who have stepped up their attacks on ships in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war.
News of the attack comes amid reports that British oil company Shell has suspended shipments through the Red Sea amid fears of further escalation, the Wall Street Journal said.

The heads of two international banking groups at the World Economic Forum in Davos also privately warned that the ongoing crisis could result in severe inflationary pressures that could reverse interest rate cuts and otherwise hurt the US economy.
War risk insurance premiums for cargo moving through the Red Sea have already increased, sources said.
As the Houthis continue to threaten international shipping in the name of the Palestinian cause, some container ships have stopped or completely skipped the Red Sea route to the Suez Canal.

About 12 percent of the world’s shipping relies on the Red Sea to access the canal.
Also on Tuesday, the Houthis attacked a Maltese-flagged Greek bulk carrier heading north in the Red Sea, about 76 nautical miles northwest of the port of Saleef in Yemen, a security firm and two Greek shipping ministries said.
The ship, the Sografia, was hit by a naval missile and “the fire was direct,” the group announced on X.

“The targeting operation was carried out after the ship’s crew rejected warning calls, including a fiery warning message,” the statement said.
“The Yemeni Armed Forces continue to take all defensive and offensive measures in their legitimate right to defend their beloved Yemen and as a confirmation of their continued practical solidarity with the oppressed Palestinian people,” he added.
The ship was traveling from Vietnam to Israel with 24 crew and empty cargo when the attack took place, one of the Greek sources claimed.
“There were no injuries, only material damage,” the source explained, noting that the ship is still sailing, but may be diverted for safety checks.
