US public support for war against Hamas waning as most Americans want cease-fire: poll

US public support for Israel and its ongoing war against Hamas is on the wane with most Americans backing a ceasefire more than a month after the brutal terror attack, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.

In a two-day poll that ended Tuesday, about 32% of respondents said the US should support Israel when asked what role the ally should play in the conflict. That percentage is a drop of nearly 10 points from the poll conducted on Oct. 12-13.

Meanwhile, about 39% of respondents want the US government to be a “neutral mediator.”

That figure is up from 27% since last month’s poll.

Four percent of respondents in the poll believe the US should support the Palestinians and 15% want the US to distance itself from the ongoing conflict.

The vote comes as thousands of Palestinians have been killed since the war erupted following a Hamas sneak attack that killed around 1,200 Israelis.

Another 240 hostages were kidnapped back to Gaza.

In a recent poll, Americans were split 50-50 on whether Israel’s response was excessive, but 68% of respondents agreed with the statement that “Israel should call a ceasefire and try to negotiate.”

Still, 76% of Americans think Israel did what any country would do after a devastating terrorist attack.

President Biden has rejected calls for a ceasefire and Israel has made clear it has no intention of stopping the fighting, insisting it would give Hamas terrorists time to regroup.

The eroding public support stands in stark contrast to the US government’s strong support for Israel, which sends billions of dollars in military aid to the Middle Eastern country every year.

Only 31% of poll respondents said they wanted US arms shipments to Israel while 43% opposed the idea and the rest were unsure.

Republicans are more likely than Democrats to support arms shipments to the Jewish state.

Regarding America’s involvement in Ukraine’s fight against Russia, 41% of people in the poll were in favor of sending weapons to Kyiv, although in this case, Democrats were more likely to support the idea than Republicans, the poll showed.

The Reuters poll was conducted online and nationwide, receiving responses from 1,006 US adults.
