USC’s Bronny James Warms Up With His Team: ‘He’s Almost There’

Bronny James is one step closer to rejoining his team on the court.

For the first time since suffering a heart attack in July, Bronny warmed up with his University of Southern California teammates before Sunday afternoon’s game, marking a milestone in his return to the court.

Bronny James Is One Step Closer To Making His USC On Court Debut

Bronny, 19, the son of NBA star LeBron James, moved one step closer to making his Trojan debut on Sunday by warming up with his team before the game. He has yet to make his college basketball debut after suffering a heart attack in July. It was later determined that he had a treatable congenital heart defect.

“It’s great to have him back and in the team with us and participating with us. We want him back as soon as possible but we want him to be as healthy as possible when he does come back,” USC guard Kobe Johnson said after the game, according to the Associated Press. “Every day we pray that he continues to improve and hopefully this year he will be able to take the field with us.”

USC coach Andy Enfield shared a similar sentiment when talking about Bronny warming up with the team.

“It’s been great. He’s been warming up with the team. He’s a big part of our program and our team,” Enfield said. “He’s a great teammate. We hope one day he’ll be back on the court but when that day comes, it’s not my decision. We will be patient and go through the process.”

After the USC game, Bronny headed to the Crypto.com Arena to watch his dad score 37 points in the LA Lakers’ win over the Houston Rockets. LeBron was glad his son was at the game after not seeing him for several weeks.

“It’s great to have him here. To see my man with a smile. Anyone who has a college kid, you know they go away and you might not see them for a week or two and then they show up at your house for laundry and a warm, fresh meal,” LeBron said. “It makes me super duper happy.”

LeBron said that Sunday was the first time he had seen his son in two weeks, but he understood.

“Nevermind. He has school, practice and he practices,” LeBron said. “Listen, the boy is 19 years old. That’s what FaceTime video is for.”

Bronny suffered a heart attack during a USC basketball practice in July. At the time, a spokesperson revealed, “Yesterday during practice, Bronny James suffered a heart attack. Medical staff were able to treat Bronny and take him to the hospital. He is now in a stable condition and is no longer in the ICU.”

Sources said that the 911 call was made from USC’s Galen Center, where the team plays and practices. An ambulance then took the teenager to the hospital. The source also said that it was a Code 3, meaning the ambulance lights and sirens signaled how serious the emergency was.

It was later determined that Bronny had a congenital heart defect and has since successfully undergone surgery to repair the defect. On November 6, LeBron told reporters that if Bronny passed his medical later this month, he would return to practice with the intention of returning to the court for games this season.
