Video accidentally captures deadly ‘shark attack’ on Mexico vacation

A video that accidentally captured a deadly “shark attack” in Mexico could shed light on whether or not alligators were actually to blame.

Canadian Joseph “Jeff” Bynens, 76, was swimming in the waters of Ixtapa Zihuatanejo on December 14 when he was bitten by a predator that bit off most of his leg, according to Jam Press.

Bynens died from massive blood loss, while his female friend who was also bitten by the same creature was treated in hospital.

A shark was initially believed to be responsible, but doctors found the injuries more consistent with a crocodile bite, according to the report.

The fatal incident was recorded in the background of a video of Marlene Luviano playing with her daughter on the beach.

The woman had asked her father to film the couple as it was her daughter’s birthday.

The terrifying footage captured Bynens swimming to a buoy and waving for help before being dragged under the water.

“We were enjoying the morning at the beach and that’s when we heard something in the sea,” said Luviano.

By the time Bynens was rescued he was “bleeding to death,” according to the woman.

“When they dragged him out of the sea, the wound was already very visible. I noticed no more blood coming out,” he said.

The violent death came days after María Fernanda Martínez Jiménez, 26, was killed by a shark in Melaque, about 500 miles to the north, while she was swimming with her young son.
