Vigilante accused of posing as minor online to lure and kill convicted child predator

A Texas man posed as a minor and lured a convicted child sex offender to death because he felt law enforcement wasn’t doing enough to keep pedophiles in prison.

James Spencer III, 24, connected with Sean Connery Showers, 37, on the messaging app Kik, where he posed as a minor as the two planned to meet while some of their messages appeared to be “sexual in nature,” according to ABC 13.

Rain fell as far as the 900 block of Northwood St in Houston on May 29, 2023, when a car pulled up next to it before the driver fired multiple shots “automatically” and sped off.

In 2009, Showers pleaded guilty to federal possession of child pornography and was sentenced to 30 months in prison, along with being required to register as a sex offender.

Ten years later, he was sentenced to another two years in prison for failing to register as a sex offender, according to records obtained by the outlet.

Another motorist found Showers’ lifeless body in a ditch in a residential area.

Investigators linked Spencer to Showers’ death after a phone found under the man’s lifeless body had messages indicating he planned to meet someone at nearby Montie Beach Park.

“(Spencer and Showers) communicated using social media applications,” said Chief Prosecutor of the 179th District Court, Rehman Merchant.

“The communication is sexual. Officers believe they met at the park to engage in sexual activity.”

Several messages from Spencer were apparently used to get Showers to admit his past.

“There was some communication on the phone or between the two regarding (Showers’) dealings or past interactions with children or minors,” Merchant said.

Spencer was charged with becoming a guardian after claiming law enforcement wasn’t doing enough to stop other predators.

“(A) third party state (Spencer) told them he believed the police weren’t doing enough to keep pedophiles in jail and (Spencer) wanted to rob and hurt those types of men because they would do bad things to little kids and other people and he knew how to track them through an app on the phone,” his bail order, obtained by KTRK read. “A month later, the defendant made the same comment that ‘if the police won’t do anything, maybe he should kill them himself.'”

Police also linked Spencer to the murder using phone records that traced the man to the scene of the murder, with him later admitting to going to the location “several times.”

“Based on the conversation he had with the girlfriend, that kind of comment he made was ‘pedophiles’ in the plural,” Merchant said. “As of now, we are still investigating the matter.”

Spencer was arrested Wednesday by the Gulf Coast Violent Offender Task Force.

He is currently being held on $25,000 bond in the Harris County Jail on a charge of first-degree felony murder, according to jail records.

The district attorney’s office filed a motion to have him held without bond, citing that he was released on bond on a possession of a controlled substance charge in Brazoria County, according to KTRK.

“This is very sneaky,” Andy Kahan, Victim Services Director of Houston Crime Stoppers told Click2Houston. “When I saw this, I would say ‘this is the stuff you see in the movies.’”

“This guy had to do a lot of deep background, had to prepare for this. It’s not something that randomly spurred the deal,” Kahan said.
