Violent gangbangers busted in Cancun after bodies found hacked up with machete

Six members of a drug gang in the Mexican tourist hotspot of Cancun were arrested Monday for allegedly killing and cutting five people with machetes and burying three others in shallow graves, prosecutors said.

Quintana Roo police said six men were linked to the gruesome murder, which first came to light on January 29 when police found five hacked bodies inside a motorcycle cab.

The investigation led officers to the gang, who were members of a notorious criminal gang dealing in drug sales, extortion, vehicle theft and murder in the area.

The victim has not been identified.

After arresting the group, police confiscated their drugs, including marijuana, cocaine and crack, as well as two firearms used exclusively in the Mexican military.

Police also confiscated motorcycle taxis used to transport mutilated bodies, with one of the motorcycles reported stolen again on January 11.

After tracing the stolen vehicle from where it was taken, police found three bodies dumped in a ditch and buried in shallow graves.

The Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office identified the six adult men arrested as Cristian N, Yobani N, Pablo N, Raul N, Ernesto Alonso N, and Rosario N.

The man was arrested along with two minors, who have not been named.

The arrests come alongside a wide-ranging drug operation in Cancun, where 23 others have been arrested as part of a bogus call center that preys on tourists, delivers drugs and uses motorcycle taxis and minors as lookouts.

Mexican authorities said the bogus travel agencies were doing business through call centers where they offered sports equipment and tour packages to tourists in the popular resort town.

The suspect, however, would not deliver the goods and services and simply keep the money.

The second floor of the call center housed their drug-trafficking operation, police said, where they would solicit sales over the phone and deliver them on motorcycles.

Along with the large organization, Quintana Roo police also arrested another suspect accused of buying and selling drugs on social media, including home delivery.

A popular tourist destination, Cancun has been plagued by violent crime in recent years, with prosecutors recently confirming the deaths of an American man and woman who were fatally shot last week during a dispute at a beach club in Tulum, just south of the resort town. . .

Prosecutors said the American man killed in the shooting had cocaine and pills in his possession when he was fatally shot.

He was believed to be a drug dealer, with the woman appearing to be a civilian caught in the crossfire, police said.

Last year, the US State Department issued a travel warning to tourists, asking them to “raise situational awareness” in Mexican resort towns over an increase in violent crime and drug trafficking.

But tourists appeared undeterred as Mexico’s tourism department revealed on Monday that foreigners spent nearly $31 billion in the country last year, with about half spending their time in Cancun.

Spending figures are up 10% from 2022.
