Virgil Abloh’s wife, Shannon, is stepping in to ensure her late husband’s legacy stands the test of time.

It’s been a year since the beloved designer died of cardiac angiosarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. Shannon has flown under the radar and now she is sitting with New York Timesready to talk about life after the departure of friends and husbands.
“Even though we know what challenges he’s up against, it’s going a lot faster than we thought,” Shannon admitted, noting that he wasn’t ready for the departure. “We never had a discussion of ‘this is the legacy I want you to work on’.”
However, the two have such a long history that “I know every inch of him. I know every inch of his brain.” That’s why she felt qualified to continue the powerful career her husband had started.

The mother of two has been with Virgil since high school and admits that she has spent most of her time behind the scenes. “That’s how our relationship goes. We knew we wanted to build this close family, and we needed someone to be a stable partner. I’m happy to do it.”
Now, he’s focused on building a legacy. “It was like this train going 500 miles an hour, and I just thought: I’ve got to stay on this train, because if I don’t, I don’t know where it’s going. That is my place and position,” he stressed.
Also, for his children Lowe and Grey, he wants to set an example. “I think it’s important for my kids to be able to see in 20 years what their dad was able to do and that mom really stepped up.”

Shannon felt that it was necessary for her to make sure that all the great things that her late husband had gone through really worked out there and were everything she imagined. She created Virgil Abloh Securities which houses her husband’s business.
Virgil’s left in the works include, a partnership with Nike called Architecture.
Creative studio London Alaska Alaska. Virgil also has a music festival at Art Basil in the works. It launches this week and will host a number of discussions, workshops and exhibitions.

Shannon also revealed that Virgil has hundreds of unreleased styles that have yet to appear, a project that will last 50 years claims Howard Feller, Shannon’s business partner.
Virgil Wants To Give Back Too

Shannon also shared that by next summer he and some of Virgil’s collaborators will meet to form some ideas to help young people realize that they can actually be anything and not just a category that society wants to put them in.
Virgil wants to be more than just a role model for “kids who don’t know that they can be an architect or a Vuitton designer instead of a basketball player or a soccer player,” but is also passionate about making it happen.
“I know what he wants,” Shannon said. “And I feel just as strongly as he does about it.”
