Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday hailed South African-born businessman Elon Musk as a “brilliant person” and businessman whose company SpaceX has become a major player in the space transportation industry.
Putin’s public praise of Musk came days after the US-based entrepreneur said he rejected Ukraine’s request last year to activate its Starlink satellite network in the Crimean port city of Sevastopol to aid attacks on the Russian fleet there, saying he feared involvement in ” main ” act of war.
Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev took part in X earlier this month to praise Musk for the decision – which has been sharply criticized by Ukrainian politicians – as “the last reasonable mind in North America.”
Putin, speaking at an economic forum in Russia’s far east, made no reference to the Starlink incident. But when asked about the success of Musk’s company SpaceX launching rockets into space, he said:

“As far as private business and Elon Musk… he is definitely a brilliant person. This must be recognized, and I think it is recognized worldwide.”
“(Musk) is an active and talented businessman and he has achieved a lot, including with the support of the American state,” Putin added.
The Russian leader said Moscow plans to continue its own space program despite the failed mission to the moon last month.
