Zaitsev was born in Ivanovo on March 2, 1938, to Mikhail Yakovlevich Zaitsev and Maria Ivanovna Zaitseva. His father was a victim of Joseph Stalin’s repression and was imprisoned in one of Stalin’s camps, while his mother worked as a laundress and laundress.
