Walgreens pharmacy staffers stage walkouts over work conditions

Walgreens has named a new CEO as pharmacy staff walked off the job this week over concerns that working conditions are putting workers and patients at risk.

Tim Wentworth, who previously led Express Scripts, a pharmacy benefit manager, was named CEO on Oct. 23.

The former CEO of Walgreens Boots Alliance, Rosalind Brewer, resigned in late August as the company struggled with drug and staff shortages.

Health care is experiencing broader employee dissatisfaction and staffing shortages that aren’t relegated to drugstores, as demonstrated by the recent Kaiser Permanente strike.

The exact scale of the pharmacist’s objection is unclear.

Organizers on Tuesday estimated that more than 300 Walgreens locations — out of nearly 9,000 nationwide — are affected by the planned walkout Monday through Wednesday.

A company spokesman said “no more than a dozen” pharmacies were disrupted.

A Walgreens pharmacy manager who helped organize the evacuation told The Associated Press that the team was understaffed and overworked, especially with additional demands from the COVID-19 outbreak.

“It upsets customers,” said the promoter, who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity for fear of being reprimanded by the company.

“It leads to medication errors, vaccination errors, needle sticks.”

Many Walgreens workers are not unionized and the workers who walked out are organizing online.

They shared three main demands for the company, organizers said: to increase transparency about shift times and schedules; to set aside training hours for new team members; and to adjust tasks and expectations at each location based on staffing levels.

Organizers say if Walgreens doesn’t address concerns from pharmacy staff, more evictions could occur by the end of the month.
