Members of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly unanimously proposed that Waris Pathan be suspended from the assembly; leading the speaker to hang it up. Fighting his suspension, Pathan later said:

I love my country. I was born here and I will die here. I cannot dream of insulting my country. Don’t judge someone’s love for a country by just one slogan. Jai Hind, Jai Bharat, Jai Maharashtra.”

  • On 19 February 2020, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Waris Pathan made a controversial statement while addressing an Anti-CAA rally in Kalaburagi in Karnataka. He said,

Now is the time for us to unite and achieve freedom. Remember, we are 15 crore but can control over 100 crore,”

By this statement, he reportedly meant that 15 crore Indian Muslims could dominate 100 crore Indian Hindus. An FIR was registered against Waris Pathan by the Kalaburagi Police, under sections 117 (abetment of public offences), 153 (provocation with intent to create riot), and 153A (promoting enmity between different groups) of the Indian Penal Code. He had to face public anger, following his allegedly anti-national speech. He later retracted his statement saying that his statement had been misinterpreted by the public. He went on to explain that “100” in his statement meant 100 people involved in anti-Islamic politics.
