A teenager in Washington, DC, was arrested Wednesday after allegedly getting into an altercation with a rideshare driver over a pet dog and hijacking the driver’s vehicle, police said.
The Metropolitan Police Department said at about 7 a.m. Sunday, an Uber driver picked up 19-year-old Dax Franco Willis in the 300 block of Eastern Avenue, Northeast.
Willis tried to get a dog into the vehicle, but the driver told him that dogs were not allowed in cars, police said.
When told he couldn’t take the dog along, Willis allegedly threatened to use pepper spray on the driver, and things escalated from there.
Police said Willis allegedly assaulted the driver, dragged him from his vehicle, stole his phone and fled in his car.
On Tuesday, police released a dash cam image of Willis – who has yet to be identified – in the hope that the public can help identify him.
The next day, Willis was arrested and charged with unarmed carjacking and robbery.

Uber did not immediately respond to questions about the car theft.
Rideshare companies require all drivers to accept rides from passengers traveling with their service animals.
But when it comes to non-service animals, the driver does not have to allow the animal into the vehicle.

On the company’s website, Uber says, “If you plan to ride with a pet that is not a service animal, it is good practice to contact the driver accepting your ride request to let them know.”
Uber also has a pet-friendly ride option called Uber Pet, where passengers pay a little more to bring a pet with them on their trip.
