Washington postal worker attributes $717K lotto win to kitten rescue

A Washington postal worker cashed in $717,500 to save a lucky kitten.

Tacoma deliveryman Joseph Waldherr arrived at work to pick up mail and packages for delivery when he heard the cries of a trapped kitten.

He was unable to locate the small creature, but when Waldherr returned the next day to hear more meowing sounds, he managed to locate the fuzzy cat, trapped in a narrow space.

Waldherr tucked the black-and-white kitten with peach-colored cheeks into his sweatshirt pocket and let him snooze for the rest of his shift.

The successful rescue leaves Waldherr feeling like he’s in the heat, and the dispatcher decides to stop by a convenience store on the way home to pick up a Hit 5 lotto ticket.

“I had a lucky day,” he told KUOW. “Maybe I should buy a lottery ticket.”

A few days later, Waldherr checked the ticket with his wife and learned that he had hit the jackpot, winning $717,500.

Waldherr credits the jackpot to saving the kitten, which he and his wife decided to keep and have named. “Peaches.”

He plans to keep a portion of the winnings and use the rest to help his parents with their retirement and donate to charity.

“My wife and I have everything we need. We just want to help others,” he said.
