Wayne Brady Opens Up About Mental Health: ‘I’ve Always Been Depressed’

“Let’s Make A Deal” host Wayne Brady is now opening up about depression.

The 50-year-old, who is currently competing on this season of “Dancing With the Stars” with partner Witney Carson, has come forward, admitting to having struggled with mental health throughout her 30s and how Robin Williams’ death made her reflect. his life is more.

When talking to Excellent thoughts, the actor and television host said that around his 42nd birthday, his depression reached a point where he couldn’t “get rid of it” anymore.

“[I] think depression is a dangerous beast,” admits Brady. “It is a dangerous disease that, when I think back, I feel that I was always depressed. [I] now know that…for years, I had an imbalance that I couldn’t deal with.”

He admits that he always saw seeking mental health help as a sign of weakness, but after getting support from his ex-wife Mandie Taketa, Brady started therapy.

“Because I think, like a lot of people in the African American culture, I grew up thinking that therapy was a bad word or that therapy wasn’t for me — therapy for white people, therapy for crazy people,” Brady explained. “So it took a lot of effort to open my eyes to see that asking for help is not a weakness. In fact, that is the force that says I need this. That’s great power.”

The world was shocked when news broke that comedian Robin Williams killed himself in August 2014. He was 63 years old.

Williams was someone Brady looked up to, and so his suicide really hit the “Let’s Make A Deal” host. “Robin is someone I have a lot of respect for, blessed to work with. I’ve been touched by it my whole life,” Brady explained. “And when you see somebody with the mind of Robin Williams, and the goodness of Robin Williams, and the talent of Robin Williams say, ‘I can’t talk to anybody about what happened to me because it’s too great,’… I know that I don’t want that for myself.”

The “Masked Singer” winner admitted that as a comedian, sometimes people forget that they are only human and can sometimes face their own struggles, which can be difficult to deal with, especially while simultaneously trying to bring joy to others through comedy.

“The reality is that everyone deals with something every day. Just because someone makes you laugh doesn’t mean they can’t have normal feelings,” added the 50-year-old actor. “They make you laugh because that’s their job. Because that’s their call. It is not a personality trait. So, when someone asks, ‘Well, you must be funny at home. Why are you sad?’ No, because that’s my job, and I’m here for my job.”

He continued,

“The stigma is in your head. Yes, certain people may judge you, but that’s life, but the fact is, if you don’t get help because you feel and you use the words, ‘Well, it’s not for me,’ or ‘I’m going to be judged,’ or ‘I can’t speak with strangers,’ then I’m just telling you, if I can tell you that going to therapy, and talking and really taking care of your mental health is similar to someone with an illness. And if the doctor says, if you just take this pill every day, I’m not saying that it will cure it, but it will definitely arrest it. Are you not going to take the pill? So, take it, take the pill talk to someone.”
