Wayne Bunnell, Rome Odunze’s maternal grandfather, was a huge influence on Huskies players. ESPN recently investigated Rom and his connection to his grandfather. Previously, in an interview with 247Sports, Rome said that his grandfather, Wayne, taught him how to milk a cow. He spent most of his childhood on a farm with his grandparents.
The ESPN video was shot on the day of the Sugar Bowl as the entire Bunnell cheered for Rome and his squad. The footballer is closer to his mother’s family, as seen by his mother’s social media name, Necia Bunnell. A young Roman is seen riding his grandfather’s tractor in the video. He would spend his summers on his grandfather’s dairy farm, working alongside him. Necia explains in the film that her father tried to instill hard work in her since childhood in Rome. The player agrees with that notion and attributes his work ethic to his grandfather.
Rom claims that his grandfather worked in the fields for a long time to make ends meet. Wayne prioritized his fitness while working on the farm, and after getting up at 4 a.m. and milking 80 cows, he would go on a 30-mile bike ride.

However, one incident changed Wayne’s life. He had an accident and fell over the bar on August 4, 2016. Wayne hit his head and suffered a traumatic brain injury. Wayne was wearing a helmet at the time, but it could not protect him from the crash due to his speed.
Wayne claimed in his interview that he had no recollection of the collision. Wayne lost his sight after the accident, and Necia claims that she had to stop farming and that it was a life changer. Wayne never saw Rome play for the Huskies, but every time they played, he sat in his recliner and listened to Rome play. Wayne said in the film, “It was neat to see him do so well and accomplish so much.” I adore him and am proud of him.”

The Huskies athlete is apparently estranged from his father’s family. He has never mentioned his father in any previous interview. However, a Facebook post by her uncle, Ikenna Odunze, provides some insight into her other relatives. Ikenna uploaded the Facebook post to boast about Rome’s sporting achievements.
The tweet was made in 2018, while Rom was a member of his high school team, the Bishop Gorman Gaels. He broke the state record for receiving yards in a game at Nevada. Ikenna said that Rom followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, Odindu Odunze, by achieving athletic records. His grandfather’s sporting achievements are unknown, although he had a Ph.D. Odindu Odunze, sometimes known as James Odunze, may have obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Missouri. He has a Facebook profile but doesn’t seem to use social media very often.
