Wayne Smozanek Cause of Death
No-prep drag racer Wayne Smozanek has died at age 60. The cause of his death was related to the COVID-19 he had been fighting since early December.
According to his wife Wendy, he had been in intensive care for seven weeks. Wendy had reported signs of improvement in the days before her death.
In January 2022, after Wayne was hospitalized, his wife Wendy shared on her Facebook, “We have assured his nurses, nurse practitioners and doctors that he is stable and resting comfortably.”
Wendy added, “He’s very sedated. It’s seriously hour by hour. COVID is a disease that goes through phases of constant ups and downs, hourly and daily. Wayne is struggling to breathe on the BiPAP and they think it’s best to let him rest and let the vent does such a scary job.
After Wayne’s death, Wendy wrote, “It is with a heavy heart that I have to let our family, friends, racers and fans know that Wayne has passed away. We are absolutely devastated and heartbroken. He is missed, and I promise his legacy will live on.”
Fellow NPK racer Mike Murillo shared, “We’re a racing family and this really works. We will miss the good man from today. Similarly, Scott Taylor added, “Rest in peace my friend! You are a great man, father, husband, friend, and fellow racer.”

Wayne Smozanek and his wife Wendy Davison Smozanek met each other on July 17, 1988 for the first time. He came to Wendy’s parents’ house to attend his sister’s birthday.
