WGA Supporters Thrown Out Of Taping Of ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’

Two viewers claim they were kicked out of Monday’s taping of “The Drew Barrymore Show” for supporting the Writers Guild of America, WGA, strike.

The incident happened on the first day of reshoots for season 4 of the hit talk show, just a day after host Drew Barrymore announced the show would be returning amid a strike.

Posts shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, by audience members Dominic Turczek explain the incident.

“Went to @DrewBarrymoreTV after winning ticket, unaware of #WGA strike. We took the pin & got in, got kicked out, & verbally assaulted by the @DrewBarrymore crew. Clearly they don’t support #WGAStrong, the writers or the fans!” he wrote. “#DrewTheRightThing So we grabbed a shirt and joined in. That f***.”

Turczek added some more context in response.

“*For clarification* We know about #WGA strike, only they weren’t picketing at Drew’s show. We didn’t realize until inside, that the show had WGA writers, thus crossing the picket line by starting over. We won the ticket at the last minute and didn’t do enough research, he explained,” he explained.

When a follower replied about them being kicked out, Turczek added, “Yes. We didn’t say anything to anyone or cause any kind of scene. That little button really triggers @DrewBarrymoreTV. Wondering why…”

Many thanked Turiczek for his solidarity and apologized for having to go through such a difficult test.

“Thank you for your solidarity! It is terrible that you have been treated so badly. I think all the empathy he shows people on his show is earned,” wrote one. Another said, “HERO! Doing the right thing isn’t easy. We appreciate and are so grateful for your support.”

In a statement released to PEOPLE, a representative for “The Drew Barrymore Show” expressed “regret” over the incident and the way it was handled.

“It is our policy to welcome everyone to the tapings of our shows,” the spokesperson said. “Due to increasing security concerns today, we regret that two spectators were not allowed to attend or were not allowed to enter. Drew is completely unaware of the incident and we are in the process of contacting affected viewers to offer them new tickets.”

The talk show host discussed his decision to bring back his show during the strike on his Instagram page on Sunday.

“I made the choice to leave the MTV, film and television awards because I was the host and it had a direct conflict with what the strike was dealing with which was studios, streamers, film and television. It was also the first week of the strike and so I did what I thought it was the right thing at that time to stand in solidarity with the writer,” his Instagram announcement read.

“And to be clear, our talk show actually ended on April 20th so we didn’t have to close the show. However, I also made the choice to come back for the first time in this protest for our show, which may have my name on it but this is more bigger than just me.”

While some of Barrymore’s Instagram followers supported her decision when she first shared her announcement, the comments section looked very different on Monday.

“Writers make you your career. They give you a line. You wouldn’t be where you are without them. I have always thought of you as someone who has a lot of empathy. Not anymore. Not if you do this,” wrote one.

Another follower added, “This is not humility. It is many things but not that. You’re stabbing us all in the back, make no mistake, and trying to act like it’s noble. And it doesn’t.”

One person said, “Interesting how your words seem like you’re not screwing up the writer but you’re screwing up the writer. It’s like you know the important words but people don’t.”
