What we know about the 14 Israeli hostages released by Hamas on Sunday

Hamas released 17 more hostages Sunday, including nine children and an 84-year-old mother of five who Israel said was in a life-threatening condition.

The group of 14 Israelis and three Thais on Sunday brought the total released since the four-day ceasefire with Israel that began Thursday to 58.

Among those released was the first American to be freed during the ceasefire: a 4-year-old girl in custody whose parents were killed by terrorist groups during the October 7 attack on Israel.

A Russian-Israeli citizen was also released — the first Israeli adult to be released during the ceasefire. He was working as a sound engineer at the Tribe of Nova music festival when it was overrun by Hamas.

In return for the hostages, Israel agreed to hand over dozens of Palestinian prisoners and send humanitarian aid trucks to Gaza.

The ceasefire agreement allows Hamas to extend the ceasefire by one day for every 10 additional hostages released.

These are the 14 Israelis who were released Sunday:

Abigail Mor Edan was 4 years old when she was detained after Hamas killed her parents.

Little Abigail turned 4 on Friday while being held hostage by Hamas, the terrorist group that killed both her parents and raised her during the October 7 attack on Israel.

Abigail, who is a dual citizen of the US and Israel, is the first American hostage released by Hamas.

His father, Roy Edan, 43, tried to protect him in his arms when terrorists shot him dead along with his mother, Smadar Edan, 38.

Abigail’s sisters, 6 and 9, witnessed the murder and thought their sister was dead too. They manage to hide throughout the rest of the massacre and escape to safety.

But Abigail survived, and covered in her father’s blood, crawled out from under his body and sought refuge in a neighbor’s house before finally being taken hostage.

Alma Avraham, 84, was rushed to hospital in critical condition after being released on Sunday.

Avraham was rushed by helicopter to an Israeli hospital in critical condition immediately after his release, Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba confirmed, according to the Jerusalem Post.

It remains unclear what the emergency was, but Israeli officials previously confirmed he had a heart condition that required an ongoing medication regimen to manage, Ynet reported.

A mother of five, the elderly Avraham was home alone on the morning of October 7 when terrorists flooded Nahal Oz.

He hid in the storage room of his home as he called his family for help, but the door was too heavy for him to lock, and he was arrested, according to the Times of Israel.

A South African-born kindergarten teacher and mother, Siegel was kidnapped along with her husband, 64-year-old North Carolina-born Keith Siegel.

As a teacher, Siegel dedicated her career to teaching children from Jewish and Arab backgrounds, according to the Jerusalem Post.

The couple has lived together in Israel for decades.

Her husband remains in Hamas custody.

Ron Krivoi, 25, is the first adult Israeli male hostage freed by Hamas since Oct. 7.

Krivoi was working as a sound engineer at the Tribe of Nova music festival when Hamas terrorists swarmed the October 7 event, killing and taking revelers hostage as they fled.

A Russian-Israeli nationalist, Krivoi’s release was secured with the help of the Russian government, which appears sympathetic to the Palestinian cause.

He works in construction on the side to support his long-term goal of working in the music business full-time, according to the New York Times.

Hagar Brodetz, 40, and her daughter Ofri Brodetz, 10, were released by Hamas on Sunday after weeks of captivity. Oriya Brodetz, 8, and her younger brother Yuval, 4, were released Sunday. Their father had supported their release.

Hagar Brodetz, 40, was staying at home with her three children, Ofri, 10, Yuval, 8, and Oriya, 4, when her husband Avichai Brodutch, 42, ran into the fray on the morning of October 7 to help defend their kibbutz from Hamas terrorists.

The father survived but when he returned home he found his family gone.

Hagar was known as a leader in their community before it was massacred. He is good with numbers and often helps his neighbors organize their finances. She also likes to bake French pastries.

Before being taken hostage, Ofri liked to play the guitar and listen to rock and roll. Yuval is not content playing Minecraft with his friends, and Oriya has a knack for tracking the mud across the house while playing with his truck.

Chen Goldstein-Amog, 48, and his daughter Agam, 17, were released Sunday. Tal and Gal Goldstein-Amog, 9 and 11, were also released.

Four of the Goldstein-Almogs, a family of six, were taken hostage by Hamas on Oct. 7. Two others, 48-year-old father and husband Nadav, and eldest son Yam, 20, were killed in the fighting.

Nadav was on crutches from an athletic injury when he was killed, and Yam was serving in the Israel Defense Forces.

Chen, 48, and his three surviving children Agam, 17, Gal, 11, and Tal 9, were kidnapped by terrorists and taken into custody in Gaza.

October 7 is not the first time the Goldstein Almogs have been devastated by terrorist violence — in October 2003, five members of their family were killed in a terrorist attack in Haifa, according to the Times.

Sisters Dafna and Ela Elyakim, 15 and 8, were kidnapped by Hamas after the terrorists live-streamed their father’s murder, and the siblings have only just been released.

Siblings Dafna and Ela Elykim, 15 and 8, were at their father Noam’s house in Niz Oz on October 7 when Hamas terrorists stormed the house while broadcasting the attack live on Facebook Live.

Noam was seriously injured when he was shot in the leg, and Dafna was recorded crying over him in a Facebook video, according to the Times of Israel. He later died along with his girlfriend and son.

After the girls were taken hostage, their mother and Noam’s ex-wife, Maayan Zin, begged President Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to send her to Gaza to be with them in custody.

“Put me in Gaza. I will be hostage 243. If I can hold them and tell them everything will be fine. Hug them and tell them that Mom is here — no matter what, Mom is here,” she pleaded in an emotional video posted to X in early November.
