Early Life
Musk grew up in a prosperous family. His father was elected to the Pretoria City Council as a representative of the anti-apartheid Progressive Party, and his children adopted their father’s anti-apartheid sentiments. Joshua Haldeman, his maternal grandfather, was an American-born Canadian who led his family on a record-breaking trip to Africa and Australia in a single-engine Bellanca. Musk chose to live mostly with his father after his parents divorced in 1980. Musk eventually came to regret his actions and became estranged from his father. He has a younger sister and an older brother on his father’s side.
