WASHINGTON – The White House claimed that President Biden relied on “publicly available data” on Monday when he appeared to accept the death toll distributed by the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry without questioning its source.
Biden previously dismissed the Gaza Health Ministry data as anti-Israel propaganda, but on Monday, he said while hosting Jordan’s King Abdullah II at the White House that Israel was killing “too many” Palestinians in response to the Oct. 7 massacre. over about 1,200 people by Hamas terrorists.
“Too many, too many of the more than 27,000 Palestinians killed in this conflict are innocent civilians and children, including thousands of children,” Biden said, appearing to cite somewhat outdated figures from the Gaza Ministry of Health , which on Monday counted even more. out of 28,000 dead.
Biden’s apparent acceptance of the data came as he stepped up criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the conflict.
Polls show that the president’s re-election campaign is threatened by his plummeting support among Muslim and Arab voters in swing states like Michigan.
National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters at a regular briefing at the White House on Tuesday, “The president was referring to publicly available data on the number of casualties.
“And as he said, too many of those, unfortunately, are innocent civilians. He was referring to publicly available data,” Kirby said.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre also deflected when a reporter pressed her on the matter.

“That seems to be a figure from the Gaza Ministry of Health,” said a journalist.
“Last fall, President Biden said he was ‘not convinced’ of the numbers because of the health ministry’s ties to Hamas. Do President Biden and the White House now have confidence in the numbers coming from the Gaza Ministry of Health?”
Jean-Pierre replied, “There is data out there that talks about lives lost, innocent lives lost.”
When pressed, he added, “We know thousands of lives have been lost. We know that.”
A White House spokesman did not clarify the source of Biden’s data after the briefing.
