The White House mocked President Biden’s primary challenger on Thanksgiving, referring to presidential candidate Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) as an “inexperienced turkey.”
Phillips, 54, reprimanded Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in a recent Atlantic article, using very sharp words that he “heard.[d] from others” about the veep’s readiness and competence.
The lawmaker noted that his personal interactions with Harris have shown that he is “considerate” and could become president if “something happens” to Biden, who turns 81 on Monday.
“[I]n which [A]atlantic, [I] share kind words about @VP [H]arris because that’s my personal experience and [I] respect him,” Phillips later explained on X.
“[I] should not refer to other people’s opinions. [I] own it and apologize to him and everyone affected by the same situation.”

The veiled attack and mea culpa drew a rebuke from White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates on Thanksgiving morning.
“This Thanksgiving, avoid the inexperienced turkey,” Bates said to Xreposted Phillips’ statement.
Recent polls show a majority of Americans express concern about Biden’s age — and that former President Donald Trump is outpacing him in a hypothetical 2024 general election race.
“[I]n which [A]atlantic, [I] share kind words about @VP [H]arris because that’s my personal experience and [I] respect him,” Phillips later explained about X.
But Phillips is 66 percentage points behind Biden in polls for the Democratic nomination, according to the RealClearPolitics average, with spiritual guru Marianne Williamson also leading the Minnesota Democrat by three percentage points.
Phillips is currently serving his third term in the House and has voted with Biden 100% of the time, according to FiveThirtyEight, despite choosing to challenge the president for the Democratic nomination in late October.
The president is spending Thanksgiving at billionaire David Rubenstein’s Nantucket mansion, declining to reveal whether he or the Carlyle Group co-chairman paid for the six-day vacation.
