Jones was born at St. David in Bangor, Caernarfonshire, the only son of teacher Nest Rowlands and shipwright Derek John Jones. He went to Ysgol David Hughes and grew up in the small Welsh-speaking town of Llandegfan in Anglesey (a secondary school). Jones joined the Bangor Cathedral choir at the age of nine and, although never serving as Head Chorister, rose to the position of principal soloist within two years.
