He graduated from Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In the 2016 NHL Draft, the Toronto Maple Leafs selected JD in the third round, 72nd overall. However, he did not have the same amount of success as his older brother Jordan. Then, in 2021, JD signed a two-year contract with the AHL Bruins to continue his hockey career.
