After a two-year hiatus, the program returns for its sixth season in 2023. McKayla appeared via Zoom for her tryout, singing a rock classic 1987, Alone by Heart. Phil and McKayla’s situation is extraordinary. Phil’s wife Kendra gave birth to their daughter McKayla in the summer of 2006, while he was in Memphis trying out for season 6 of American Idol.
Phil performed live versions of My Sweetheart and Let’s Get It On. Former judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson voted in favor of it after a brief debate, while Simon Cowell abstained.
