Whoopi Goldberg Claps Back At Hilary Clinton & Ryan Gosling About ‘Barbie’ Oscars Snub

Whoopi Goldberg has declared there is no such thing as “snubs” at the Oscars amid viral speculation about the “Barbie” star failing to land an individual nomination.

As an EGOT winner, Goldberg is one of the most influential actors in the industry, which is why he knows better than anyone how the entertainment system works. The 68-year-old shared an interesting take on the Academy Awards amid outcry over the prestigious institution walking away from two great women.

Whoopi Goldberg Says ‘Everybody Doesn’t Win’ Following ‘Barbie’ Nomination Drama

The latest episode of “The View” captured the famous panel that addressed the ongoing debate about the nomination of “Barbie” at the Oscars 2024. The film, which is a box office hit of 2023, saw its lead actress Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig, excluded from the prestigious nomination.

Although “Barbie” received several nods, Gerwig and Robbie were left out of the director and lead actor categories. This jealousy sparked media outrage, including from the film’s leading man, Ryan Gosling, and former US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton.

Other panelists, such as Sara Haines and Sunny Hostin, voiced their frustration on the daytime talk show. However, Goldberg found their anger at the Oscars committee unreasonable. “Here’s the deal: everybody doesn’t win,” he explained to his co-host.

As Hostin went on to describe Gerwig and Robbie’s exclusion as an insult, the “Sister Act” star insisted their omission from their respective categories should not be viewed as such. In Goldberg’s words:

“They are not arrogant people, and that’s what I want to say. It’s not the elite; the whole Academy Awards family voting for Best Picture nominations, okay? We’re all voting for Best Picture, everyone. So there are seven to ten nominations that happen, and you don’t get everything you want to get.”

The Hollywood veteran expressed his opinion using Michelle Yeoh’s hit movie “Everything Everywhere All at Once” as an example. He pointed out that the Asian superstar won best actress for her role in the film, while the production itself was not recognized.

“So it happened,” Goldberg explained while co-host Hostin remained adamant that he believed it was a “snub” to exclude films like Ava DuVernay’s “Origin” from the Oscars. His remarks made the 68-year-old double down on his stance on “not mocking,” arguing:

“No scorn. That’s what you need to remember. Not everyone gets a gift, and it’s subjective. Movies are subjective. The movie you like may not be liked by the people who voted.”

Ryan Gosling & Hilary Clinton Slam Oscars Over ‘Barbie’ Exclusion

As noted, Gerwig and Robbie’s exclusion from the director and lead actor categories sparked media outrage from co-stars Gosling and Hilary Clinton. The actor who played Ken in the doll-inspired film was nominated in the supporting actor category.

However, she could not accept this recognition wholeheartedly while the two women who made the film a blockbuster were excluded from the award ceremony. He addressed the issue in a lengthy letter, addressing the Academy committee with the words:

“There is no Ken without Barbie, and no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for creating this historic, globally celebrated film. None of the recognition would have been possible for anyone in the film without their talent, tenacity and genius.”

Gosling insisted that while he was grateful for his nomination, he was deeply disappointed by the exclusion of Gerwig and Robbie. He highlighted their achievements in “Barbie,” noting that they made the movie the hit it is today and that “their work should be recognized along with other very deserving candidates.”

“Having said that, I’m so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to make this really great movie — Ryan Gosling, ‘Barbie,'” he concluded his message.

Clinton echoed similar sentiments on X, declaring the omission will not overshadow the woman’s achievements. he tweets read: “Greta & Margot, although it may sting to win the box office but not bring home the gold, your millions of fans love you. You two are better than Kenough. #HillaryBarbie.”

Gosling and Clinton are not alone in their frustration as “Barbie” actress America Ferrera shares the same sentiment. Although she earned her first Oscar nomination for her supporting role as Gloria, the 39-year-old said it was a shame the lead star was not recognised.

“I was very disappointed that they were not nominated,” Ferrera admitted in a recent interview. “Greta has done almost everything a director can do to deserve it.”

He echoed the same praise about Robbie, saying: “What Margot has achieved as an actress is truly unbelievable. One of the things about Margot as an actress is how easy she makes everything look.
