Why Bill Hader Refuses To Give ‘Star Wars’ Autographs

Actor Bill Hader isn’t one to sign autographs, especially not on “Star Wars” merchandise that includes BB-8.

Some fans may not know that “Barry” stars and Ben Schwartz voice the iconic droid, and both are credited as “BB-8’s vocal consultant” in the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy, which consists of 2015’s “The Force.” Awakens, ” “The Last Jedi” 2017, and “The Rise of Skywalker” 2019.

However, the 44-year-old comedian refuses to autograph “Star Wars” merchandise, and he has a pretty good reason for that.

In an April 2023 appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, the “Superbad” actor confirmed “I’m not signing it” when asked about signing “Star Wars” merchandise. “The autograph people don’t like me,” he added. “I’m not going to sign anything.”

There was actually one particular incident that caused him to stop signing items. “You know what that is? I used to sign things, and then one time I saw someone and they had their son come to me to sign the BB-8 thing and it was three in the morning,” Hader recalled.

Unfortunately, it seems that Hader is good at face, because he recognized the child later in life. “I left the premiere of Inside Out and then we went to the after party and it was really late and this guy kept his son up all night. [He] was like, ‘Go over there so he’ll sign it so I can sell it online.’”

“I was like, ‘That’s been renewed,'” he continued. “So now, I’m just blanket, like, I’m not signing any s—.” And that’s not the only reason Hader won’t be signing BB-8 merchandise. Although he was praised as a voice consultant, he felt that most of his ideas “didn’t work”.

“It was sweet that JJ Abrams put my name on it, but I went in and did a voice thing for him that didn’t work,” Hader explained. “Then, he brought me in later and said, ‘Hey, do you want to do this.’ It’s like a … talk box thing and then I do it. And the reason he didn’t ask me back was because anyone could do that. It’s like a machine you can operate.”

Believe it or not, “The Force Awakens” and “The Rise of Skywalker” director JJ Abrams actually created BB-8’s iconic “voice” by manipulating their voices through a talking box attached to an iPad running a sound effects app.

Although it’s not clear what he contributed, Hader didn’t feel the amount was too much. “I did some voice stuff that didn’t work, so… I’m not sure what Ben [Schwartz] do it, but I just know that’s my experience doing it,” Hader added.

Actress Daisy Ridley confirmed that she will return for another “Star Wars” film at the Star Wars Festival event in London last month. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed that the film will take place fifteen years after the events of “The Rise of Skywalker.”

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly shortly after the event, Kennedy confirmed that the story will involve Rey trying to rebuild the Jedi Order fifteen years after the First Order was destroyed.

“As we move into future space — this story is about 15 years beyond The Rise of Skywalker — obviously we realize after the war, after the First Order the rise of the New Jedi Order, we left episode 9 with Rey making a commitment to Luke Skywalker that he would rebuild the Jedi Order,” Kennedy said.

“So here we are — we’re ready to do it. And it took a lot of discussion because obviously we’ve been developing stories in different spaces, and television has been a big focus of our attention right now,” he continued. “But there’s still a lot of interest in what happens after The Rise of Skywalker. So we’re excited to do that. .”

Currently, Daisy Ridley is the only actress joining the project. However, Kennedy has teased that “It’s impossible to see some people coming back.” So far, no release date for the film has been announced.
