The actress said that at the time, she didn’t see it as a good reason for changing sexuality and told them so. “I think Disney wanted him to be weird in the beginning, and I just didn’t feel comfortable doing that,” says Symoné. “They were like, ‘Do you want Raven to be gay?’ I said, ‘Why?’ [and they said,] ‘Because of you.’ I said, ‘Bad excuse, bad. That’s a bad reason.’”

Symoné further explained that Baxter, in the Disney show, has never shown any sexual identity and suddenly coming out as gay is quite absurd. “Raven Baxter has never exhibited any kind of sexual identity situation in the past. I’m not being myself in this show, I’m being a character. Raven Baxter is not gay,” Symoné said.

“It didn’t matter what the first four seasons looked like, with me and Chelsea sleeping in the same room and us raising a family together. Okay, not like that. We are friends. Who sleeps in the same room,” he continued.

The actress also revealed that she doesn’t want Baxter to have a romantic relationship in the “That’s So Raven” spinoff. Symoné said, “It’s so funny because we’re working on season six right now, and I’m talking to the EP, and they’re like, ‘And you’re going to start dating?’ I was like, ‘He doesn’t even need to date. He’s just going to be anything.'”

Symoné explained per Insider, “The reason I said no is not because I’m not proud of who I am or that I don’t want to represent the LGBTQ+ community in any way. It’s because Raven Baxter is Raven Baxter is Raven Baxter, and there’s no reason for me to change that human being to fit the actor who plays it.”

The actress added that the character was divorced in the film, and she felt no need to protest that she had a boyfriend.
