The ex-wife of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau “re-coupled” with an Ottawa pediatric surgeon months before the country’s first couple announced they were separating.
Sophie Grégoire Trudeau — who surprisingly revealed in August that she was separating from the leader after 18 years of marriage — is in a relationship with Dr. Marcos Bettolli, 48, a few months earlier, according to the National Post.
His ex-wife, Ana Remonda, alleged in a divorce letter filed on April 26 that Bettolli had “reunited with a high-profile individual who attracted significant media attention and provided significant security considerations,” according to the outlet—which named the unidentified as ” high profile individual” as Grégoire Trudeau.
Remonda, a stay-at-home mother, wrote in court documents that she was “out of position” in her ex-husband’s new relationship.
But she insisted the new relationship resulted in unspecified safety concerns “to which the children are exposed while in their father’s custody” and sought a court order to protect the privacy and protection of their two children, the National Post reported.

In response, Bettolli reportedly insisted that his ex-wife’s attitude toward his new relationship was “not in the best interest of the children,” and claimed that Remonda threatened to return to their home country of Argentina if his new relationship became public.
The couple’s divorce was finalized in January 2020, and the allegations outlined in court documents have not been confirmed.
Meanwhile, the prime minister’s office confirmed in August that he and his wife had signed a legal agreement.
The couple did not give a reason for their sudden split at the time. Now it is known that Grégoire has started a relationship with Dr. Marcos Bettolli, 48, a few months earlier.
“They have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps regarding their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so in the future,” the Prime Minister’s spokesman said in a statement at the time.
“They remain a close family and Sophie and the prime minister are focused on raising their children in a safe, loving and cooperative environment.”
After their separation, Grégoire Trudeau moved out of the prime minister’s estate and lived in another house in Ottawa, while his children lived in the official residence.
The location of her new home has not been revealed, but the first lady has posted an Instagram video about mental health care and gender equality that appears to have been filmed not far from Rideau Hall, the prime minister’s official residence.

An unmarked vehicle with what appeared to be members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police inside has also been seen in recent weeks inside the building — which is listed as Bettolli’s address, according to the National Post.
He works at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, specializes in minimally invasive surgery and chest wall defects in children, and teaches at the University of Ottawa’s medical school.
Bettolli went to medical school at the Catholic University of Cordoba in his native Argentina, according to his bio on the University of Ottawa website.
He then moved to Canada in 2004, before becoming the educational leader for the university’s pediatric surgery undergraduate program in 2010.
The Post has reached out to Bettolli, Grégoire Trudeau and the prime minister’s Office for comment.
