Supporters of the efforts of the Speaker of the House of Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) has targeted the wife of a Republican lawmaker who opposes his bid, sending anonymous text messages and emails warning that her husband could be fired from Congress if she does not support Jordan’s candidacy.
“Why did your husband make a mess by not supporting Jim Jordan? I think he’s a team player,” read one text to Angie Bacon, wife of Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.), according to Politico.
Angie Bacon replied, “Who is this???”
“Your husband will not hold any political position again. Really disappointing [sic] and he failed,” the unknown sender messaged back.
“He’s braver than you,” Angie Bacon replied. “You will not put your name on your statement.”
Rep. Don Bacon was one of 20 Republicans who voted against Jordan for speaker on Tuesday, in the first vote cast by the full House of Representatives.
Jordan, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, needed 217 votes to win the gavel, but only got the support of 200 members.

“Jim is good, one-on-one, but his broader team has played hard,” Bacon, who voted for Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Tuesday told Politico, noting that he had received calls from GOP leaders in Nebraska telling him to vote for Jordan.
“Talk to your husband tell him to step up and be a leader and help the Republican Party get a speaker there is too much going on in the world for all of this to happen in the Republican Party,” another anonymous text sent to Bacon’s wife read, according to Politico. “You guys take five steps forward and then turn around and take 20 steps back, no wonder our party is always a mess.”
Bacon is among several GOP lawmakers who have expressed displeasure at being pressured by Jordan’s supporters.

“A little advice if anyone is trying to get my vote,” Rep. Mario Díaz-Balart told reporters Monday. “The last thing you want to do is try to pressure me because then I shut down completely.”
“If people think they can pressure me, that’s where they lose me,” he added.
Díaz-Balart voted for House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) on Tuesday’s vote.
“I think some of it backfired … and I think it hurt Jim,” Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), who voted for Jordan, told reporters Tuesday about the pressure tactics.

Several House Republicans told Politico they don’t believe the badgering campaign came directly from Jordan, and the Ohio Republican called for an end to the attacks after his failed election.
“We must stop attacking each other and come together,” Jordan tweeted. Too much is at stake. Let’s get back to dealing with the crisis on the southern border, inflation, and helping Israel.”
