Will New York City finally get snow? Chances increase along I-95 corridor

Poor New York City, still singing blue without snow.

The city is at 699 days and counting, nearly two years since the Big Apple has seen an inch of snow.

That streak may finally end this week as snow chances increase for the week.

“Last winter was a big disappointment. Despite a few storms hitting, it looks like NYC is covered. I don’t think this will happen again this season,” said Meteorologist Jason Frazer, a snow lover. “I can’t wait to see the snow and introduce my daughter to it.”

Frazer said she can’t wait to dress her daughter in a “big winter jacket” and introduce her to the winter games of her youth. But, there are also serious implications to the lack of snow.

“We need it primarily to avoid some of the challenges we face in New Jersey,” Frazer continued. “We have an above average number of forest fires because the land is dry. We don’t want that to happen again, so we need snow!”

Philadelphia and Baltimore are also in a snow drought. Most of the Northeast has snow amounts below what is normally seen at this time of year.

Who will see snow: Forecast

After so many disappointing storms this winter, the cold is finally here. But do we have the moisture to ring an inch? Meteorologist Jane Minar said yes, actually, 1.1 inches for New York Monday night into Tuesday.

Meteorologist Michael Estime is not a believer. Winter Storm Expert Tom Niziol says it’s too close to call.

“Meteorologically, this is an open wave. It’s moving pretty fast, but it will have enough cold air and enough moisture to potentially drop measurable snow even along the 95 corridor,” Niziol said.

An open wave is a broad area of low pressure that moves from west to east without surface storms.

“(It’s) not a big storm. You might see a few inches here or there, in that area,” Niziol continued. “It might break records for a few days with less than an inch of snow in Philly and New York. I don’t see a big impact here, but what- what snow happens at the right time throughout the day along the megalopolis corridor, like the 95, can have an impact.”

Meteorologist Jane Minar said 1.1 inches could be expected for New York Monday night into Tuesday. AP

Baltimore and Washington, DC, started out as a wintry mix before turning to snow. Philadelphia starts like snow. But all three played with areas of ice or rain before the rain subsided.

Boston and New York start out as snow, but they could also end up with a mix of ice and rain before the system takes off. The stretch from Baltimore to New York City could see 1 to 3 inches of snow.

Travel problems after holidays and commuters

Much of the I-95 corridor through the Mid-Atlantic can see dangerous driving when the ice band passes overhead.

Unfortunately, the slippery conditions started on Monday afternoon just as anyone who traveled for the three-day weekend was returning home.

Snow, rain and ice will continue into Tuesday, making the commute back to work difficult as well.

“The heaviest snow is likely to peak Tuesday morning as a coastal low parallels the Northeast Coast,” the FOX Forecast Center said. “Passengers may face challenging conditions due to reduced visibility. Snow will close Tuesday evening in New England as freezing temperatures remain through the week.”

So far, New York is 7.5 inches in the red for snow this season.

Boston got more than 10 inches, Philadelphia more than 5 inches, while Buffalo, New York, was a half-foot low for the season.

Long range forecasts are expected

If we can’t get inches this week, watch the forecast for next week to break the streak.

“There are suggestions that we will see the same kind of pattern, the same track. Another storm developed out of the Gulf and raced northeast toward the Atlantic and the East Coast,” Niziol said. “It’s still too far, the way out of that energy in the Aleutians now, to detail what’s going to happen there. But keep an eye out as we head into the end of the week in the Mid-Atlantic and in the Northeast for more significant winter weather events there.”
