Wisconsin police shot dead a gunman who opened fire on officers from the roof of a high school, where up to 70 students were trapped inside.
Germantown Police said they responded to a call about someone “acting erratically” in the Kennedy Middle School parking lot shortly after 6:30 Monday afternoon.
When two officers tried to chase him, the gunman managed to climb onto the roof – using a high vantage point to shoot the police below, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The police returned fire, attacking the gunman. No other injuries were reported.
First responders rendered aid, but the shooter died at the scene, according to the Justice Department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
The gunman has not yet been identified, and his motive is unclear.
As it all took place outside the building, between 50 and 70 high school students remained inside, where they attended after-school practices for activities such as cheerleading, basketball and color guard.

The high school was immediately placed on lockdown due to a “school safety threat,” Germantown School District officials notified the community on Facebook later that night.
Among those inside the school was Samantha Scherdin, a seventh-grader who had been attending dance practice when the school was closed.
“There’s a lot going on,” he told WISN. “My friends and I just got together and hugged and cried.”
“But we were told we had to be quiet so nothing would go into the building, but we were told there was nobody in the building – just things moving around and we heard gunshots and screams.”
Eventually, the district sent buses to pick up students and transport them to elementary schools down the road.
Germantown Police said they received a call shortly after 6:30 Monday afternoon about someone “acting erratically” in the school parking lot.
Parents are instructed to bring their IDs to pick up and are told to expect more information when they arrive.
By Tuesday morning, district officials said, “All students, families and staff inside the building are safe, accounted for, and have been reunited with their families.”
Kennedy High School was closed Tuesday, as the Department of Justice continued its investigation. Once the investigation is complete, the DOJ will send a report about the incident to the Washington County district attorney.
The unidentified gunman was killed at the scene by police personnel.
Officials said Monday night that the shooting was “believed to be an isolated incident” and there was no danger to the public.
“All interactions with the subject occurred outside the building,” the DOJ said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the three police officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave, according to agency policy.
