Witnesses watched 14-foot shark kill surfer in Australia

A surfer is feared dead after witnesses saw him mauled by a 13.75ft giant shark on a remote beach.

The 55-year-old man was attacked by a Great White near Granite Rock south of Streaky Bay, South Australia about 10:20pm on Tuesday.

Emergency services launched a full-scale search for the man’s body, which has not yet been found.

Surfer Jeff Schmucker who was on the scene raced out on a jetski to find the man, but was cornered by what he believed to be a 13.75-foot great white shark.

“It attacked him from the side. He went down once and went up again and went down again and that was the last time the boy saw him,” he told 7News.

The man struggled but was no match for the large shark, according to another witness.

Eyre and Western Police immediately responded and began a search with the help of Operation Air Police, PolAir, the State Emergency Service and local volunteers following reports of the attack.

Granite Rock is a famous Great White breeding ground and the attack happened in front of several beachgoers.

The Adelaide Advertiser reported a witness described the incident as “chaos”.

The attack comes just weeks after Pamela Cook was bitten by a shark in Beachport in the state’s southeast.

The cook was bitten on the leg, suffering serious injuries in the early morning maul.

He was attacked shortly before 8am while swimming with local community group Beachport Sea Urchins and Slugs near the town’s pier.

It also follows the death of teacher Simon Baccanello in May, who is believed to have been killed by a shark while surfing at Walkers Rock near Ellison on South Australia’s west coast.

A witness claimed he saw a shark drag Mr Baccanello into the water.
