American television producer and “Wizards of Waverly Place” creator Peter Murrieta revealed that he originally intended for Selena Gomez’s character on the show, Alex Russo, to be in a gay relationship.
Murrieta shared that she always imagined Alex Russo would bond with her friend Stevie, played by Hayley Kiyoko.
He said that he couldn’t make it happen because, at the time, the Disney channel took a culturally conservative approach to issues like LGBTQ+ characters or same-sex relationships.

In a recent appearance on the “Wizards of Waverly” podcast, Peter Murrieta shared his original intentions about the relationship between Alex Russo, played by Selena Gomez, and Stevie, played by Hayley Kiyoko.
Murrieta shared that she would love to see their relationship turn into a gay romance if the series was released in the present and if the Disney channel allowed it.
“I wish we could play more with what is clear to most of us,” he said. “We couldn’t do it at the time, but it was pretty clear to all of us what the connection was.”
He revealed that the show could not feature a gay relationship between the couple due to Disney’s conservative stance at the time.
“Disney Channel has [LGBTQ] characters, and they do. At the time it wasn’t a thing but we got as close as we could… I mean, it was pretty close,” Murrieta said, adding that it would be great to see a gay relationship between them.

Murrieta, who produced the first three seasons of the show, shared how he hopes the fourth season will end.
“I hope season four is about building [Alex] and [Sulkin’s character] Mason’s relationship,” he said, per Daily Mail.
She also pointed out that she was hoping for a wizarding competition where Gomez’s character, Alex Russo, would win but give up her powers because she fell in love with someone who wasn’t a wizard, just like her father.
